The Ηoly monastery of Prophet Elias is the highest point of the island. Is located at an altitude of 567 meters , only 3 kilometers away from the traditional village of Pyrgos , in the southeastern part of Santorini.
The monastery, with a history of at least 300 years was built in 1711 and it’s founders were the brothers Gabriel and Joachim, sons of Antonios Belonias and Catherine Sigalas who used to be a very well-known couple back in the old days of Santorini histrory.
In the earthquake of 1956 , the monastery granted their holdings and that’s how the village of Kamari was created.
From 1892 to 1997 the monastery remained closed.
The number of relics hosted in the monastery exceeds 3.000. Among them are sacred vessels of the 18th century , gospels, manuscripts and patriarchal sigils.
Tip : In the evening of the Holy Saturday in Santorini don’t miss the chance to go up to the monastery. Celebrations are traditional and electricity is not being used.
